Evil Spock may currently be the most wanted Vulcan in America, but he looks great. We saw some footage of him—digitally enhanced by freakin’ slow computers—holding up a convenient mart. I’m sure he had his reasons. I’m just amazed how marvelous he looks.The same can be said for Fernando Lamas, an Argentinian movie star who crossed-over to Hollywood in 1951 to become a Latin Lover. Before marrying swimmer Esther Williams, Lamas had been hitched to Pearl Mux (4 years), Lydia Barachi (6 years) and Arlene Dahl (6 years). Williams was with him from 1969 until his death in 1982. Fernando has a son with his second wife, Lorenzo, who went on to star in Falcon Crest.
It’s unlikely many would remember the elder Lamas if it weren’t for Billy Crystal. The comic-actor developed a “Fernando” character for Saturday Night Live in the mid-1980s, when the show was having a resurgence. Crystal’s inspiration was a quote from Lamas on The Tonight Show: “It is better to look good than to feel good.” The rest is catchphrase history.
Evil Spock really does look marvelous. I hope the CTU folks who get to him before he kills another Presidential candidate realize that and refrain from hitting him in the face.
